Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Massachusetts Satellite Training Program?

The Massachusetts Satellite Training Program (MASTP) is an Off- season training program fashioned on the training principles employed by USA Hockey's National Development program as well as many of the top college programs in the country.

What is the goal of the MASTP?

It is our goal to help every player reach their full potential as hockey players and athletes.  Please visit our Program Overview page to read our Mission and Objectives.

My son/daughter is registered for one of the Mass Hockey Player Development offerings i.e. Spring Festival, Cunniff Camp, day camp.  Is this the same thing as the MASTP?

No.  While in years past the MASTP and Mass Hockey Player Development offerings were administered collectively and held joint tryouts at the older levels, this is no longer the case.   Tryouts for the MASTP are held independently of the tryouts for the Mass Hockey Player Development offerings.  The MASTP continues to be staffed and run by the same group of committed professionals who have made the program what it is today.

Can anyone participate in the MASTP?

Tryouts are held to select players to participate in the MASTP.  We conduct tryouts in order to select those players that we believe are capable of successfully participating in the program and that will benefit from the high tempo training that our staff provides.  The MASTP is not geared toward beginners.

What age groups can participate?  Is it open to boys and girls?

We presently offer programs for players age 11 thru the age of 18 .  Our programs are co-ed at the younger ages.  Programs for 13 year olds and above are split up by gender.  Please visit our program specific pages and registration page for more information on programs and birth dates/gender requirements.

When does the MASTP take place?

Tryouts for the program take place in April.  Those selected for the program will participate in off ice training during the month of June followed by on ice training during July and August.  Off Ice training is also conducted in conjunction with on ice training during July and August.

Where are tryouts held?

Tryouts are held in multiple locations in an effort to ease the travel burden on our participants.  This year tryouts are being held at Canton Sportsplex, Canton, Babson College in Wellesley and the Boch Ice Center,Dedham

Where is the MASTP conducted?

The Off- ice portion of the program is conducted at multiple locations throughout the area.  On weekends the training takes place in South Boston in the vicinity of the Murphy Skating rink just prior to Castle Island.  Weeknight training occurs on the campuses of Babson College in Wellesley, and the Belmont Hill School.

The On- ice training portion of the program will be conducted at Babson College.

My child plays other sports in the spring/summer, does this preclude them from participating in the MASTP?

The staff of the MASTP are firm believers that well-rounded athletes make better hockey players.  One of the reasons we use multiple training locations throughout the week and conduct the training on multiple nights is to afford those participants who might have the occasional conflict the opportunity to make up a missed session.  We consider participation in another sport or a family event for that matter an acceptable absence.  We only ask that you notify the staff in advance and put forth the effort to make up the missed training session.

Who runs the Massachusetts Satellite Training Program?

The program is run by a group of coaches and administrators committed to player development at the local and national level.  Our Off- ice and On- ice staff consist of coaches and trainers who have dedicated themselves to their craft and have years of experience and more importantly success at developing players and helping them to reach their full potential.  The majority of our staff have played the game at the collegiate and/or professional level and have gone on to coach at the high school, prep school, collegiate , US National Teams and professional levels.  Please visit our Staff page for a partial list of coaches.

Where do players that have particpated in the MASTP go on to play?

Many of our players will go on to play hockey at the high school, prep school and junior hockey levels. We have also had a number of players selected to attend the USA Hockey National Team Development Program.  Many of our participants will in turn go on to play college hockey.  Over the years we have also had a number of our alumni reach their ultimate goal by playing hockey at the professional level.  The pictures on our homepage show just some of our alumni.  Many of whom point to their time with the MASTP as an important part of their overall development.

How do I register my child for the program?
